There are few things more frustrating than an air conditioner that's running but not cooling during a July heat wave. Here are the eight most common reasons your AC is blowing warm air — and which ones you can fix yourself.
1. Thermostat set wrong
Check that your thermostat is set to COOL and the fan is on AUTO, not ON. Set to ON, the fan blows continuously even when the system isn't actively cooling, which feels like warm air.
2. Dirty air filter
A clogged filter chokes airflow and can freeze your evaporator coil. Replace filters every 1–3 months during cooling season.
3. Low refrigerant
Refrigerant is what actually removes heat from your air. If it's low, there's a leak — and simply adding more without fixing the leak is a temporary, costly patch. This needs a licensed technician.
4. Frozen evaporator coil
Restricted airflow or low refrigerant can ice over the indoor coil. If you see frost on the unit, turn it off and let it thaw, then address the underlying cause.
5. Dirty outdoor condenser
The outdoor unit releases the heat your AC removes. If it's caked with leaves, grass, or dirt, it can't dump heat effectively. Gently clear debris and keep two feet of clearance around it.
6. Tripped breaker
Central AC uses two breakers — one for the indoor unit and one for the outdoor. If the outdoor unit's breaker trips, the fan may run inside while no cooling happens.
7. Failing capacitor or compressor
The compressor is the heart of your system. A failing capacitor or compressor stops the cooling cycle and requires professional diagnosis and repair.
8. Leaky or blocked ductwork
Cooled air escaping through duct leaks — or blocked by closed dampers — can leave rooms warm even when the system works. A technician can pressure-test your ducts.
